Germany is working on a new China strategy under a more sober approach
THE Germany may be forced to sever her relations with China as he did with her Russiain the event that China attack the Taiwansaid the head of the chancellor’s Social Democrats (SPD). Olaf Solz in Die Zeit newspaper, in comments published today.
Germany is working out a new strategy for China as part of a more sober approach to relations and wants to reduce dependence on the Asian economic superpower.
“We have to realize that tomorrow, the day after tomorrow or in 10 years, maybe the time will come when China will cross the border,” Lars Klingbeil told Die Zeit newspaper.
“If China attacks Taiwan, our relations with China will also fundamentally change, as it does with Russia.”
Solz has said that relations with Russia cannot return to the period before Moscow attacked Ukraine.
Although Germany has helped Ukraine arm itself to face the invasion, a senior German lawmaker said today that Germany will not supply arms to Taiwan, nor has it been asked to do so. China considers Taiwan to be its territory.
“The situation here is different. Our role is less military here. It’s an economic issue,” said Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, head of the German parliament’s defense committee, while on a visit to Taipei.
Klingbeil said Germany needs to become more independent from China, open other markets and find other partners for trade in raw materials, adding: “This is the big lesson from our relationship with Russia.”
Berlin’s plans for a new China strategy mark a departure from its policies under former Chancellor Angela Merkel, who took major business missions with her on her frequent trips to China and saw economic ties blossom. China became Germany’s top trading partner in 2016. In recent years, German politicians and businessmen have advocated greater diversification in trade with Asia in response to President Xi Jinping’s growing control over society and the economy. Shortly before leaving office in 2021, Merkel told Reuters that she may have been initially naive in some areas of cooperation with China.
