Ukraine should be ready on the border with Belarus, says Zelensky

“We understand that apart from strong statements, we don’t see anything strong there, but we should be ready both on the border and in the regions,” the Ukrainian president underlined.

Ukraine should “be ready” on its border with Russia’s ally Belarus, despite only seeing “strong statements” coming from its neighbour, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky.

Zelensky made these comments after visiting the Lviv region, where he discussed border protection and the security situation in northwestern Ukraine.

Kyiv has warned that Russia may try to use Belarus to launch a new ground invasion of Ukraine from the north.

The Ukrainian president made no mention of those warnings in his comments on the Telegram messaging app after attending what he described as a security coordination meeting in the Lviv region.

“We discussed security issues of the state borders, the operational situation on the border with the Republic of Belarus and measures against subversive actions on these territories,” he said.

“We understand that apart from the strong statements we don’t see anything strong there, but we should be ready both at the border and in the regions,” he concluded.

The president’s office released footage of Zelensky at that meeting and said the president also took part in a memorial service for Ukrainian soldiers who have died since Russia invaded Ukraine in February.
