“Time is now running out for the industry to reach a deal or be hit by widespread disruption during the spring,” UCU general secretary Jo Grady said.
More than 70,000 staff at 150 universities across the UK will strike for 18 days between February and March over disputes over pay, working conditions and pensions, the Universities and Colleges Union (UCU) announced today.
“Time is now running out for the industry to reach a deal or be hit by widespread disruption during the spring,” UCU general secretary Jo Grady said.
The union, which represents academics, teachers, librarians and professional staff at colleges and universities, says it is demanding better pay after employers agreed to a 3 percent wage increase following a decade of pay that was below inflation, it said.
As the country faces double-digit inflation, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is under pressure to resolve a wave of strike action in Britain that began last year.
The strikes involved hundreds of thousands of workers and repeatedly disrupted essential services such as health care and rail transport.
