Malta: 582 cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours – Omicron variant not yet identified

by

The Maltese health authorities announced on Wednesday that 582 cases of SARS-CoV-2, an unprecedented number, had been confirmed in the previous 24 hours, while two more patients died due to complications of COVID-19, both men, aged 52 and 53.

The previous case record (401) was recorded in March 2020.

So far, no case of the Omicron variant of the new coronavirus has been detected on the island.

The pandemic in Malta has so far reached 473 deaths out of a total of some 43,000 recorded infections.

The number of patients with COVID-19 admitted to hospital increased to 47 (+7 in 24 hours), with four being admitted to intensive care units (ICU).

The Maltese Midwifery and Nurses Association warned yesterday that the situation at the island’s only state hospital is now critical, as dozens of patients with other illnesses, especially seasonal flu, have also been admitted.

He called for postponing non-emergency surgeries to alleviate the institution’s overload, and criticized the government for failing to take tougher measures to stop the spread of SARS-CoV-2.
