Brazil’s far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro admitted he made “some mistakes at home”, addressing supporters in the US, according to a video released Monday.

“We all make some mistakes at home,” including members of the current government, Mr. Bolsonaro said, adding that during his tenure “every day was Monday.”

The former head of state left Brazil on December 30, two days before his centre-left successor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who beat him in October’s presidential election, took over the presidency.

In a video clip uploaded to the website Metrópoles, his supporters advise him not to return to Brazil, where the Supreme Court recently included him on the list of people it is investigating for their role in the raid on the seats of the three powers — judicial, legislative and executive— in Brasilia on January 8.

Thousands of Bolsonaros have stormed buildings a week after Lula took over the presidency, Congress and the Supreme Court, as they refuse to recognize the election result.

“I deplore what happened,” Mr Bolsonaro told his supporters, calling the events “unbelievable”.

Infrastructure, works of art of incalculable value and furniture were part of the public property which was destroyed in the riots.

More than 1,100 people remain in police custody over the January 8 raid, which the Lula government, which took office on New Year’s Day, has described as “terrorism”.

Mr Bolsonaro — who has been reclusive and rather silent in the final weeks of his term — condemned the devastation hours later and denied any involvement in the attack.
