NATO countries together have more than 2,000 Leopard tanks, considered among the most powerful in the world
“Give and take” he wishes Berlin for sending modern tanks to Ukraine. Germany will not allow its allies to deliver German-made tanks to Ukraine, nor will it send its own, unless the United States also agrees to send tanks American-made, the Wall Street Journal writes, citing high-ranking German officials.
The International Institute for Strategic Studies, based in London, estimates that NATO countries combined have more of 2,000 tanks Leopard type, considered among the most powerful worldwide.
It is noted that the chancellor of Germany Olaf Solz, under pressure to give the “green light” to sending Leopard tanks to Ukraine, pledged on Wednesday to continue to support Kyiv, but made no mention of tanks.
At the end of his speech at the Davos Economic Forum, which was dedicated to Germany’s climate policy, Scholz was asked directly if he would send Leopard 2 tanks, as requested by Ukraine. “We support Ukraine not only with financial means and with humanitarian aid but also with many weapons,” he replied in general terms.
The German chancellor made no concrete announcement, not even uttering the word “tanks”, two days before a crucial meeting of Western countries on Friday at the US base in Ramstein on aid to Ukraine. But he reminded that his country has been supporting Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion, supplying it with various weapons, such as rocket launchers, Marder-type armored vehicles and the Iris-T anti-missile system. “We will continue as long as necessary” in cooperation with Berlin’s allies, he assured, reiterating again that he wants to avoid any direct NATO conflict with Russia.
Finland’s leaders, of Lithuania, Poland and Britain asked Solz on Tuesday to soon approve the delivery of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. European countries supporting Ukraine have sent more than 300 modernized Soviet tanks to Kyiv, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is demanding more modern, Western-made tanks.
