Political crisis in Peru: One dead, one injured in new clashes

by

The new death brings to at least 43 the dead — including a police officer — since Peru’s new political crisis erupted on December 7.

At least one person was killed in new clashes between protesters and police in Macusani, a town in the Andes in southern Peru, near the border with Bolivia, the San Martin de Porres Hospital announced Wednesday.

“At 6:20 p.m. (local time; at 01:20 today Greek time) a 35-year-old female without vital signs was admitted to the emergency room,” explains a press release from Makousani hospital.

The new death brings to at least 43 the dead — including a police officer — since Peru’s new political crisis erupted on December 7.

The press release also mentions an injured man, about “30 years old,” hit “in the chest.”

The death comes as thousands of villagers from the provinces converged on Lima in recent days to take part in mass protests.

According to media reports, the Makusani police station was set on fire during yesterday’s riots.

Peru has been rocked by unrest since the suspension, arrest and pretrial detention on December 7 of leftist former President Pedro Castillo, accused of attempting to stage a “coup” by ordering the dissolution of parliament, which was preparing to remove him from office.

The protesters, mostly from Andean regions in the south, are demanding the resignation of new president Dina Bolluarte, the dissolution of Congress, the establishment of a Constituent Assembly to draw up a new constitution and immediate presidential and parliamentary elections.

Mrs. Boluarte, Mr. Castillo’s vice president until he succeeded him under the Constitution, is of Andean origin. He was elected with the party of the radical left whose candidate was Mr. Castillo. The protesters call her a “traitor”.

In an effort to deal with the protests and unrest, her government reimposed a 30-day state of emergency in Lima, Cusco, Callao and Puno — the latter among the worst-hit areas.

The measure allows the intervention of the army to enforce order and suspends fundamental rights, including those of movement and assembly. The Boluarte government had already declared a state of emergency for 30 days in December throughout the territory.
