The spring of 2024, when the next European elections will be held, is approaching and the “fermentations” in the European Parliament are increasing.

Qatargate changed the facts with the Social Democrats under pressure and the rest of the political groups with their eyes on Brussels where Antonio Panzeri will very soon press the “red button”.

The agreement he made with the Belgian authorities will certainly speed up developments.

This was appreciated in Strasbourg, where from Monday until today the Plenary Session of the European Parliament is underway and all the political groups are on their feet.

The “knives” in the European Parliament came out where perhaps no one expected it.

The socialist Mark Angel was yesterday voted vice-president in place of Eva Kaili based on the agreement of the European People’s Party, the Socialists and the Liberals that existed before.

Finally, after 95 abstentions in the first round, a second round had to be held to elect the politician from Luxembourg, with estimates indicating that more of the right wing and less of Renew Europe chose not to attend.

The “capsoni” did not go unnoticed and was much commented on in the corridors of the first floor of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

However, the Eurosocialists, even with a small adventure, kept the five vice-presidents they had before.

The “knives” came out in the European Parliament in view of the new electoral battle in Geria Epirus in about a year. And other conflicts will certainly follow, especially in matters related to the fight against corruption.

Already the president, Roberta Metzola, has tabled a package of measures to ensure transparency with the opposition raising objections.

In the next period, a working group that will be set up by all the political groups will try to make the best possible composition.

How are the balances at the moment in the European Parliament? The 762 seats, after some reshuffles, are divided by the political formations as follows: EPP (European People’s Party) 176 seats, S&D (Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats) 145 seats, Renew Europe (Renew Europe) 102 seats, Greens/EFA (Greens – European Free Alliance) 72 seats, ID (Identity and Democracy) 65 seats, ECR (European Conservatives and Reformers) 63 seats, The Left (Left) 38 seats.
