His remarks came hours after former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev warned NATO that a Russian defeat in Ukraine could spark a nuclear war.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said today that Moscow would do everything possible to “come together” with the European Union and NATO, which he accused of setting out to weaken and defeat Russia.
His remarks came hours after former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev warned NATO that a Russian defeat in Ukraine could spark a nuclear war.
Nearly 11 months after the invasion of Ukraine, Russia is increasingly presenting the war to the Russian people as an existential battle with the West. In televised remarks, Lavrov said Moscow would try to dissuade Western politicians for their “arrogant” and “colonial” attitudes towards Russia.
“I hope that they will see things realistically”, emphasized the Russian Foreign Minister. “We will do everything so that our colleagues from NATO and the European Union come together as soon as possible.”
Lavrov was speaking during a visit to Belarus, a close ally of Moscow, which is holding air drills with Russia this week – part of a long series of joint military activities that have sparked concern in Ukraine that President Putin may seek to lure Belarus in the war against Ukraine.
“We have a common position on what goals should be achieved and how to ensure that neither Russia nor Belarus is threatened by our neighbors – be it Ukraine or anyone else,” Lavrov said after meeting Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko . Minsk reported that the defense ministers of the two countries also held telephone talks.
The joint air exercises, which began on Monday and are due to last until February 1, use all of Belarus’ military airfields. Belarus has declared that these high schools are purely defensive in nature.
Ukraine has repeatedly warned of possible attacks from Belarusian soil, and President Volodymyr Zelensky said last week that Ukrainian forces should be ready at the border.
