Vaccination in Ecuador becomes mandatory from the age of 5, something that happens for the first time in the world, the country’s Ministry of Health announced on Thursday.
“In Ecuador, vaccination becomes mandatory,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that “compulsory treatment starts at the age of five.”
To date, only a few countries have compulsorily vaccinated their citizens, but almost all only the elderly. Two Central Asian countries, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, have made vaccination mandatory for adults since July. In Indonesia, vaccination for Covid-19 has been mandatory since February 2021 and those who are not vaccinated are threatened with sanctions, but by December 1, only 35% of citizens had been vaccinated. Micronesia, in the Pacific, has also made vaccination mandatory for all adults since July. From the end of December, the vaccination of adults will also become mandatory in New Caledonia, the French autonomous territory in the Pacific.
In Europe, Austria is the first country to make vaccination mandatory since February.
The Ecuadorian Ministry of Health has assured that the measure is not unconstitutional because the law stipulates that the government can impose vaccinations for certain diseases, provided that certain conditions and conditions are met, such as those that currently exist due to the epidemiological situation in the country.
Only those who have a medical contraindication are excluded from the mandatory vaccination.
Of Ecuador’s 17.7 million inhabitants, 69% are fully vaccinated. About 900,000 people have taken the third dose.
Last week, the government decided that only with a vaccination certificate would one be able to take part in demonstrations or go to shopping malls, restaurants, cinemas and theaters, whose capacity has been halved.
