In ‘Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields’, the documentary that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in the US, American actress Brooke Shields reveals that she was a rape victim early in her career in Hollywood.
The former model kept the identity of her abuser secret, but told how she met the man – whom she knew – shortly after graduating from university, believing he was going to a business meeting to discuss her part in a film.
The man took her to his hotel, claiming he wanted to call her a taxi from his room. He went to the bathroom, where he emerged naked and raped her, Shields said.
“It was found on top of me. It was like wrestling,” he added.
The actress explained that she did not try to escape because she was afraid that it would provoke the man to use more violence against her: “I was afraid that he would choke me or something like that.”
“So I didn’t put up much resistance. I did not do it. I just completely froze (…) I was thinking ‘stay alive and go,’” Shields noted.
After the attack the actress spoke to a friend, security expert Gavin de Becker, who told her: “this is rape”, to which Shields replied: “I’m not prepared to believe it”.
Until now, the actress had never spoken publicly about her rape.
The documentary will be broadcast on the Hulu platform in two parts. The first part is dedicated to how Shields was presented as a sex idol from a very young age, after her appearance in the movie “Pretty baby” at the age of 11.
At the age of 15, she starred in two more films – “Blue Lake” and “Endless Love” – in which she had nude scenes, and also participated in an advertising campaign for Calvin Klein jeans, with the famous slogan “Nothing enters between me and my Calvins.”
Shields, now 57, said it was “a good time in my life” to appear in a documentary.
