German Leopards to replace 30 BMP-1s Slovakia has already delivered to Ukraine
Slovakia is not ready to send heavy tanks Leopard 2 that it has in Ukraine, as they replace armored fighting vehicles that Bratislava has already handed over to Kyiv, Slovakia’s defense minister said late on Wednesday Yaroslav Nant.
The agreement with Germany that they would be handed over to the Slovak armed forces Leopard 2A4 intended for them remains in force, Mr Nant told the news agency TASR.
Under the deal, one such heavy tank was delivered to Slovakia by then-Defence Minister Kristine Lambrecht, while 14 more are expected to be delivered by the end of 2023.
This agreement was part of the system implemented by the German government to deliver weapons to Ukraine indirectly, from allies, which it christened circular exchange.
Thus, the German Leopards will replace the 30 BMP-1 which Slovakia has already delivered to Ukraine.
To help Kyiv, Slovakia is willing to send it Soviet-designed tanks T-72, but they will need to be replaced as well, Mr Nant added.
