In the final stretch of the presidential elections in Cyprus: Christodoulidis is the favorite – The scenario of the overthrow

by

Cyprus enters the final stretch for the presidential elections next Sunday, February 5, with the race for the presidential palace having a clear favorite

According to all opinion polls, Nikos Christodoulidis, who comes from the governing DISY, who is supported by the small parties of the center-right and the socialist party EDEK, is expected to emerge first with a percentage of around 29%. The second position is contested by the president of the largest right-wing DISY party, Averof Neophytou, and the former diplomat Andreas Mavroyiannis, supported by the left-wing AKEL party, who, according to opinion polls, gather around 22%. An important finding of the polls, however, is that in the scenarios of the second round (February 12), a possible qualification of Nikos Christodoulidis, also ensures his victory, since he seems to win whoever of the candidates of the major parties is against him.

The Cyprus issue is at stake

The only way for the scenarios of the second round not to be verified is for the major parties of the right and the left to choose to support the candidate of the opposing faction who will face Nikos Christodoulidis. Such a scenario – as improbable as it may seem – could be implemented on the basis of the common approach of the two major parties to the Cyprus problem, which is in conflict with the positions of the parties that support the candidacy of Nikos Christodoulidis and which disagree with the Bizonal-Bicommunal Federation solution.
