Slovakia’s parliament today approved the proposal to hold early elections on September 30five months ahead of schedule after the centre-left coalition government was recently defeated in a motion of no confidence and the parties failed to form a new majority government.
The government of Prime Minister Edward Heger it collapsed in December after one of its participating parties left and joined the opposition, accusing it of not doing enough to help citizens cope with rising living costs.
In the upcoming elections, it is expected that the pro-Western, liberal and conservative parties will clash with the two left-wing formations, which include the Smer party of former Prime Minister Robert Fitzo. Smer opposes arms shipments to Ukraine and is wary of Western sanctions against Russia, similar to those imposed on Hungary.

Polls show Smer and Hlas (“Voice”) of another former prime minister, Peter Pellegrini, ahead of the parties in the outgoing governing coalition.
