London, Thanasis Gavos
The British government has decided not to impose further restrictive measures against the coronavirus and the Omicron variant in England before the New Year, confirmed the representative of the Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the Minister of Health Sajid Javid.
Mr. Johnson had previously been briefed on the latest epidemiological data by his scientific advisers, particularly on the treatment of Omicron institutions.
A Downing Street spokesman said the figures would continue to be evaluated, but that no further steps would be taken this week.
Shortly afterwards, Mr Javid said: “There will be no further measures before the New Year.” Asked if people should go to the New Year’s parties that are organized, he said that they should do rapid tests in advance and where possible celebrate in the open. He called on citizens in general to “remain vigilant”.
It is noted that in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland there are restrictions on indoor gatherings and a number of other restrictions, such as the closure of nightclubs.
In England only the obligation to use a mask in most enclosed spaces applies, excluding catering, the prompt for teleworking and the obligation to present a vaccination certificate or a negative rapid test to enter certain crowded places.
Mr Javid did not rule out further action in January, acknowledging that there was still uncertainty about the properties of Omicron, which accounts for “about 90%” of Covid cases in England.
