Earlier today, commemorations of the Soviet victory in Stalingrad began with the laying of wreaths at the magnificent monument to the fallen in the Battle of Stalingrad, where the eternal flame burns.
Tribute to the fallen by Putin
The authorities declared February 1 and 2 public holidays. President Vladimir Putin is expected to visit the city today for a speech, almost a year after he ordered the attack on Ukraine.
These celebrations come as the Kremlin consistently presents its attack on Ukraine as a “de-Naziization” operation, in keeping with the legacy of World War II.
For Russians, Stalingrad is synonymous with victory over Nazism, and this battle is central to the patriotism promoted by the Kremlin
Vladimir Putin continues to call the Ukrainian leadership “neo-Nazis” who are determined, according to him, to exterminate the Russian-speaking population of eastern Ukraine.
