The US will continue to work in coordination with its allies to “make clear to the Taliban that their actions will have significant costs and block the path to improving their relations with the international community.”
The US Department of State has announced new sanctions and travel restrictions on Taliban officials in response to bans on women working and studying in Afghanistan.
“I am taking action (…) to impose additional visa restrictions on certain current and former members of the Taliban, members of non-state security organizations, and other persons believed to be responsible for or complicit in the oppression of women and girls in Afghanistan “, stated US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in a press release released by his services.
After retaking power in August 2021, the Taliban imposed extreme restrictions on women, barring them from most public sector jobs, denying them access to secondary and university education, or even going to parks.
In late December, they banned non-governmental organizations from employing Afghan women, forcing several of them to suspend their activities.
The US will continue to work in coordination with its allies to “make it clear to the Taliban that their actions will have significant costs and block the way to improving their relations with the international community,” Mr. Blinken added.
