Croatian president: Russia will recognize Kosovo, Serbia is the ‘cheated lover’

“The situation in Ukraine is the beginning of the end of an apparent Serbo-Russian romance in which Serbia will realize that it is a deceived lover,” Milanovic said.

Croatian President Zoran Milanovic said on Wednesday that Serbia is “cheated lover” of Russia. The comments were made at a press conference with Slovenian President Pirk Musar in Zagreb.

“The situation in Ukraine is the beginning of the end of an apparent Serbo-Russian idyll in which Serbia will realize that it is a deceived lover,” Milanovic said characteristically.

Russia will eventually recognize Kosovo’s independence to make it legal for what it does in Ukraine, according to Milanovich.

“The reality is that Russia he is trying something with Ukraine and that the example of Kosovo is before it. Russia will have to at some point recognize Kosovo or pretend to recognize it in order to legitimize what it is doing in Ukraine. (Serbia) must understand that it is bothering Russia and that there is no love there,” he said.

Milanovic on Monday criticized the recent decisions of European countries preparing to send weapons to Ukraine.

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, with most UN member states including the US, UK, France, Germany and Turkey recognizing it as a separate autonomous country from its neighbour. But Belgrade continues to consider it its territory.
