Musa Hasahya Kasera he has so many children that he can’t remember most of their names. The Ugandan villager struggles to support his huge family, which he says includes 12 wives, 102 children and 578 grandchildren. However, as he typically states, “enough is enough”.

“At first it was a joke, but now this has its problems,” the 68-year-old told “Aljazeera” from Bugisa village in Butaleja district, a remote rural area in Uganda.

“With my health failing and with only two acres of land, for such a large family, two of my wives left me because I could not provide them with the basics like food, education, clothing.”

Hasahya, who is currently unemployed, has become something of a tourist attraction. He said that his wives take contraceptives in order not to have more children. “My wives take contraceptives, but I don’t. I don’t want to have more children because I can’t take care of them.”

Hasahya married his first wife in 1972, in a traditional ceremony, when they were both about 17, and their first child, Sandra Nabwire, was born a year later.

“My brother, relatives and friends advised me to marry many women in order to have many children so that we can expand our family heritage,” Hasahya stresses.

He is a cattle dealer and butcher. Hasahya’s 102 children range in age from 10 to 50, while his youngest wife is about 35.

“Unfortunately, I can’t remember my children’s names. Mothers help me recognize them,” he points out. However, Hasahya cannot even remember the names of some of his wives and has to consult one of his sons, Shaban Magino, a 30-year-old teacher, who helps him manage the family’s affairs and is one of the few who have received education.

Many members of Hasahya’s family try to earn money or food by doing chores for their neighbors or spend their days fetching firewood and water, often walking long distances.

Those at home sit around the garden, some women weaving carpets or plaiting hair, while the men play cards under a tree.
