More than 250 forest fires are raging in central Chile amid heatwave

At least 16 people have died in more than 250 forest fires raging in central Chile amid a heat wave, according to the latest toll released by authorities.

Of the 251 active outbreaks, 80 remain out of control, the National Disaster Prevention and Response Agency (Senapred) said.

In addition to the 16 people who lost their lives, 24 others were injured while 88 homes were destroyed.

Among the dead are the Bolivian pilot and Chilean engineer of a helicopter that crashed while participating in firefighting efforts.

Chile is simultaneously hit by an extreme heat wave, with temperatures reaching 40ºC. Authorities fear the conditions could lead to a repeat of the tragedy of 2017, when a massive forest fire killed 11 people, completely destroyed more than 1,500 homes and burned hundreds of thousands of acres of forest.
