Gale-force winds and blizzards in the Czech Republic left thousands of households without power today and closed the main highway connecting the country to neighboring Slovakia.
In the Žilina region of Slovakia, authorities called on residents to stay at home and avoid non-essential travel, especially to the north. Winds blow at a speed of 120 kilometers per hour in the Tatra mountains.

In Czech republic15,000 households are still without power (up from about 90,000 in the morning) after winds knocked down trees and power lines.
The CTK agency also reported that dozens of train routes were cancelled.
