The operation of the port was suspended until further notice after the fire broke out due to the large earthquakes that hit the region on Monday, while shipping companies directed their cargo ships to other ports
The fire, which had broken out in containers at the port of Iskenderun (Alexandretta) in southern Turkey, was brought under control, the Turkish shipping authority announced today, after coordinated extinguishing efforts from land, sea and air.
The operation of the port was suspended until further notice after the fire broke out due to the large earthquakes that hit the area on Monday, while shipping companies directed their cargo ships to other ports.
“Ships on hold should be diverted to other facilities as ship management services cannot be provided,” the authority said in a tweet.
A port authority source said the flames had not spread to the area where flammable materials are stored and that the nature of the fire, which sent a huge cloud of black smoke over the city, was still unclear.
“We suspect it is a plastic raw material or chemical, but we cannot clearly identify it as the containers have collapsed and scattered,” the source said.
