The bus driver was taken into custody – Police are investigating whether the act was deliberate
Eight people, including children, were seriously injured this morning when a bus crashed into a daycare center in a suburban town Montrealits local authorities reported Quebec.
“There are eight seriously injured so far,” Marianne Lesard, spokeswoman for Quebec’s emergency services, told AFP.
“Sixteen vehicles, including nine ambulances, are currently at the scene,” he added.
“A large area around the perimeter” of the partially damaged building has been cordoned off, police in the city of Laval, where the daycare center is located, also told AFP.
The incident occurred around 8:30 local time (15:30 Greek time). Injured children were found trapped under the bus before being freed, the agency said.
According to the Quebec provincial government’s Minister of Public Security, Francois Bonnardel, the bus driver was taken into custody. Police are investigating whether the act was deliberate.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he was “devastated” by the incident. “I can’t imagine what the families are going through,” he added, speaking to reporters in the chambers of Parliament in Ottawa.
