Mr. Scholz also stated that he had a telephone conversation with Tayyip Erdoğan yesterday, to whom, as he said, he emphasized the will of the German government to support Turkey in every way.

Chancellor Olaf Solz earlier this evening expressed his gratitude to Greece for the assistance it offered to the earthquake-affected areas of Turkey and Syria, while he emphasized that the recent telephone conversation between Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the President of Turkey Tayyip Erdogan highlights a lot strongly that “in disasters like this, we must be united and support each other”.

Mr. Scholz also stated that he had a telephone conversation with Tayyip Erdoğan yesterday, to whom, as he said, he emphasized the will of the German government to support Turkey in every way.

Rescue and technical crews are already at the sites or heading to the affected areas, he said.

The chancellor also emphasized that Berlin is coordinating with the United Nations to provide humanitarian aid to the affected areas of Syria, “as the need is great there.” Now, he pointed out, the vital importance of the cross-border access that Germany has insisted on for years is being demonstrated.

Referring to the “wave of compassion and willingness to help” seen in recent days in German society, Mr. Scholz expressed his gratitude to the citizens.

“This shows the close relationship of our society with the citizens who have relatives or friends in the affected areas,” he said.

“However, I am also grateful to our friends and partners in the region. In particular, the recent telephone conversation between the Greek Prime Minister and the Turkish President shows very strongly: In disasters like this, we must be united and support each other,” concluded the German Chancellor.

The attitude of the Greek side in this crisis is also commented on by all the German media, which note that the immediate offer of help from Athens comes at a time of tense bilateral relations, while recalling the “earthquake diplomacy” of previous years. The Turkish ambassador in Berlin, Ahmet Basar Sen, also expressed his gratitude to Greece in interviews.
