Mexico’s Defense Ministry announced on Sunday that security forces arrested an alleged leader of a drug cartel suspected of coordinating the production and sale of fentanyl, a substance that has killed tens of thousands of people in the United States.

Thursday’s arrest in Sinaloa state comes weeks after US President Joe Biden visited Mexico and also follows the arrest of Ovido Guzman, son of notorious drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

The suspect is described as being responsible for supplying the notorious criminal “Mayo Sabada”, one of the leaders of the powerful Sinaloa cartel.

“It should be noted that the defendant is considered to be the main person responsible for the production of fentanyl and methamphetamine” and “the wholesale transportation of cocaine from Central and South America to the US,” according to the ministry’s announcement.

Following the prescribed procedure in Mexico, the Ministry of Defense did not release the initial letter of the suspect’s last name, naming him as “Jose N.”
