Thousands of drones will work together to destroy enemy defenses – but experts fear humans will lose control of ‘swarms’
The US Pentagon is planning a new one “weapon of mass destruction”which includes a group of thousands of drones that strike from air, earth and water to destroy enemy defenses.
Experts fear people could lose control of the ‘swarms’.
The top secret project, named AMASS (Autonomous Multi-Domain Adaptive Swarms-of-Swarms), could represent automated warfare on an unprecedented scale.
AMASS is still in the planning stages, but DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Project Agency) is already collecting bids from suppliers for the contract of 78 million dollars.
Small drones will be equipped with weapons, navigation and communication toolswhile their abilities range from jamming radars to carrying out lethal attacks.
While technology would change the way the US engages in warsindustry experts do not hide their concerns.
Zachary Kallenborn, of George Mason University in Virginia, said: “As the drone swarm continues to grow in numbers, it will be nearly impossible for humans to manage decisions and act wisely and safely.”
For years, it has been developing the OFFSET project (the OFFensive Swarm Enabled Tactics Program), which will include up to 250 aerial and ground drones.
Kallenborn said: “A huge swarm of error-prone drones would be terrifying – a new weapon of mass destruction.”
