THE Dutch government announced tonight that it will close the country’s consulate in Saint Petersburg of Russia and will simultaneously limit the number of Russian diplomats in the Russian embassy in The Hague.

“Russia continues to try to sneak in agents of the intelligence services in the Netherlands, under the cover of diplomacy. We cannot allow this and we will not allow it,” Foreign Minister Bopke Hoekstra said in a statement.

“At the same time, Russia refuses to give visas to Dutch diplomats to work in the consulate in St. Petersburg or the embassy in Moscow,” he added. For that reason it was decided to reduce the number of Russian diplomats in the embassy in The Hague so that they are equal to the Dutch working in the Dutch embassy in Moscow. “Therefore, a number of diplomats will have to leave the country within two weeks,” the foreign ministry said in a statement, without specifying the exact number.

The government also ordered the Russian trade agency in Amsterdam to be closed until Tuesday.
