Britain: The country experienced its warmest New Year – What the mercury showed

by

Britain is experiencing its warmest New Year today, with temperatures exceeding 16 degrees Celsius in the capital London, as announced by the country’s Meteorological Service (Met Office).

The thermometers showed 16.2 degrees Celsius in St. James Park, a park in the heart of the British capital, the Met Office clarified in a post on Twitter.

The previous record dates back to 1916, when mercury reached 15.6 degrees Celsius in Cornwall.

“This record heat for New Year’s Eve 2022 is due to a warm, subtropical gas mass coming from the Azores,” the British Meteorological Agency said in a statement.

The phenomenon, however, will not last, the service warned, with the arrival within a week of “cold gas masses from the Arctic that will cause night frost and snow in some areas until Tuesday.”

Britain already recorded the hottest New Year’s Eve yesterday, with 15.8 degrees Celsius during the day in Somerset (southwest England) and up to 16.5 degrees Celsius at night in Balla, a city in the north of Wales.

The previous record for the hottest New Year’s Eve was in 2011, with temperatures reaching 14.8 degrees Celsius in Colwyn Bay, Wales.
