The Foreign Minister of Turkey Mevlut Cavusoglu welcomed today the “important” visit of his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry, three weeks after the deadly February 6 earthquake, as Ankara seeks ways to normalize relations with Cairo.

“We are opening new pages in our relations with Egypt,” said the Turkish Foreign Minister during a joint press conference with the Egyptian Foreign Minister at the port of Mersin, where the ship carrying the humanitarian aid from Egypt sailed to Turkey.

“Mr. Soukri’s presence in Turkey is extremely important”said Mevlut Cavusoglu.

Cairo’s relations with Ankara have been frozen since Abdel Fattah al-Sisi took power in Egypt in 2013 after the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi, an ally of Tayyip Erdogan.

However Turkey it has been trying for months to normalize its relations with several regional powers, such as Israel and Egypt.

Thus, the presidents of Turkey and Egypt exchanged their first handshake at the end of November, on the sidelines of the World Cup in Qatar.

THE Sameh Shukri, who called his visit to Turkey a “message of friendship and solidarity,” previously visited Syria, which was also hit by the Feb. 6 earthquake. Egypt’s relations with Syria have also been frozen for a decade.
