Gulf authorities are stepping up alerts to residents today due to torrential rains, which have been hitting this very hot and dry area for days.
In the United Arab Emirates, torrential rains swept across the country, especially Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The bad weather is expected to last until Thursday, the official WAM news agency reported today.
In Sharjah, another emirate, pedestrians and vehicles were trapped in the mud. There were no reports of casualties.
Heavy rains also hit Saudi Arabia, including the city of Mecca. The Civil Protection Authority warned that the rains will continue in many areas.
In Qatar, authorities called on residents to be vigilant, announcing “storms” and “stormy winds” in various parts of the country, from today.
In Kuwait, the “moderate to heavy” rains will last until tonight, local time, according to the meteorological authorities quoted by the official Kuna news agency. Classes and exams will not take place tomorrow in the country’s schools due to “meteorological conditions”, Kuna adds.
At the same time, the Sultanate of Oman announced yesterday that “storms” will occur in various parts of the country, with the state television network Oman TV already showing images of flooded streets.
In the Gulf countries the weather is extremely mild in winter, with the average temperature hovering around 20 degrees Celsius, with the exception of rare and short-lived episodes of torrential rain between November and January.
