The Southwest Boeing 737 (SWA 3923) suffered “damage to one of its engines during the take-off process,” said CACSA, the public company that manages aviation in Cuba.
An aircraft of the American company Southwest had to make an emergency landing yesterday Sunday, but no one was seriously injured, shortly after taking off from the airport of Havana, the capital of Cuba, as one of its engines suffered damage, announced the Corporación de la Aviación Cubana (CACSA).
The aircraft, which did not specify how many passengers it was carrying, was flying from the island’s capital to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in the southern US.
The Southwest Boeing 737 (SWA 3923) suffered “damage to one of its engines during the take-off process,” said CACSA, the public company that manages aviation in Cuba.
The incident occurred at 12:05 (local time; 19:05 Greek time). The aircraft “was cleared to land” at Jose Marti airport, he added. “The passengers were evacuated and are in good health. The causes of the accident are being investigated,” according to CACSA.
According to media reports and a passenger’s cellphone video, one of the plane’s engines caught fire when it was struck by birds.
In the video taken by a passenger on a mobile phone, the passenger cabin is shown filling with smoke as panicked parents try to show the children how to put on the oxygen masks.
