An Italian Navy officer was sentenced Thursday night by a military court in Rome to 30 years in prison on charges of spying for Russia.

The 58 year old Walter Biot, frigate captain and father of four, from the province of Rome, Pometsia was found guilty by court-martial on charges of selling classified documents to an official of the Russian embassy in Rome.

The judges recognized mitigating circumstances in the case.

Military prosecutors in Rome last night asked that Biot, who is accused of selling classified documents to a Russian embassy official in March 2021, be sentenced to life in prison.

Prosecutors presented photos showing Biot using his cellphone to take a series of documents, images and screenshots on a computer.

“Some of the 19 documents photographed by Biot they were classified NATO documents and one was top secret,” said the prosecutor.

“Biot traded in classified documents and displayed a high degree of treachery and a capacity for criminality.”

The prosecutor alleged that Biot may have sold classified documents on other occasions.

Italy had expelled two Russian embassy officials in 2021 in connection with the said case.
