New cases of coronavirus in the Netherlands jumped to a record level of around 24,500 today, as the Omicron variant of the coronavirus became the dominant in the country, according to official data.
Cases have risen by almost 60% since last week, despite a severe lockdown that has closed all unnecessary shops, restaurants, hairdressers, gyms, museums and other public spaces since December 19th.
The previous record of just under 24,000 infections in 24 hours was recorded during the surge caused by the Delta virus variant, which flooded hospitals across the country in late November.
The lockdown has helped reduce the number of Covid-19 patients in Dutch hospitals to their lowest levels in two months, but experts expect imports to rise again due to the rapid rise in the number of infections.
More than 85% of Dutch adults have been vaccinated, but the booster campaign remains relatively slow. To date, 32% of adults have received a booster dose, according to government figures.
