Russia will face massive consequences if it escalates the situation in eastern Ukraine militarily, European Foreign Minister Josep Borrell warned today.
Borrell spoke to reporters during a visit to the front line between Ukrainian forces and Russian-speaking guerrillas. Kiev welcomed this sign of EU solidarity in the face of the threat of a new military confrontation with Moscow.
Borrell reiterated the EU’s “full support” for Ukraine and reiterated that “any military action against Ukraine would have serious consequences and high costs.”
“We are here primarily to reiterate the EU’s full support for Ukraine’s independence, national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he told a news conference after his visit. While Russia wants to link the Ukraine crisis to NATO’s presence in Eastern Europe, in talks with the United States, Borrell stressed that “any discussion of European security must include the EU and Ukraine.”
