The Kremlin calls it “critical” to locate an object spotted next to one of the Nord Stream pipelines.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, during a regular briefing with reporters, said: “It is extremely important to determine what kind of object it is, if it is related to this terrorist act – obviously it is – and to continue this investigation. And this investigation must be transparent.”

He also told reporters that it was a positive sign that Denmark had invited the operator of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, whose largest shareholder is Russia’s Gazprom, to help collect an unidentified object found near the pipelines in the Baltic Sea.

Last week, Danish authorities said a tubular object, 10 centimeters in diameter, protruding about 40 centimeters from the bottom, was found during an inspection of the last remaining intact Nord Stream pipeline by its operator, Nord Stream AG.

Yesterday, Denmark invited the Nord Stream AG consortium to participate in the search for the object’s recovery. “It is critical to determine what kind of object it is, if it is related to this terrorist act – obviously it is – and to continue the investigation, it must be transparent,” Peskov added.

Three of the four Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines exploded under non-flammable conditions last September.
Russia, without providing evidence, has blamed Britain and the United States for the blasts, while European investigators have not said who they believe is responsible.
