US – White House: “Talks with Russia are normal, despite the situation in Kazakhstan”

by

The unrest in Kazakhstan will not affect plans for NATO talks with Russia next week on Ukraine, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters today.

The United States and its European allies are set to hold three rounds of talks involving Russians next week, beginning with a meeting in Geneva.

Meanwhile, US State Department spokesman Ned Price said the United States was closely monitoring reports that peacekeeping forces of the Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) had been deployed in Kazakhstan to quell the uprising in the country.

The organization’s secretary general told the Russian news agency RIA that the total peacekeeping force would number about 2,500 members and could be strengthened if needed.

“The United States, and honestly the whole world, is watching for any human rights abuses. And we are also watching for any action that could serve as a basis for gaining control of Kazakhstan,” Price added.
