Finland will become the 31st member of the Atlantic Alliance tomorrow, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced, confirming the announcement made earlier by the Finnish presidency.

“Tomorrow, we will welcome Finland as the 31st member,” Jens Stoltenberg said, clarifying that the Finnish flag would be raised at the Alliance’s headquarters in Brussels in the afternoon.

“Truly, it is a historic day,” he said, pointing to the fact that this is the fastest accession in recent history of the Alliance.

Asked about Sweden’s candidacy, which is blocked by Turkey, the NATO secretary general appeared optimistic.

“I am absolutely convinced that Sweden will also become a member of NATO. It is a priority both for NATO and for me to ensure that this also becomes possible soon.”

Sweden, like Finland, has guest status in NATO.

Jens Stoltenberg also called for the “immediate release” of US journalist Ivan Gershkovic, who was arrested last week in Russia, whom Moscow accuses of “espionage”.

“His arrest is very disturbing. It is important to respect the freedom of the press, the rights of journalists, the right to ask questions and do their job. For this reason, we demand his immediate release,” Stoltenberg said during a press conference in Brussels.
