Kirill Petkov’s liberal We Continue Change (PP) party today ruled out forming a coalition government with Boyko Borisov’s right-wing GERB partywhich emerged first in Sunday’s parliamentary elections, prolonging the political stalemate in Bulgaria.

After the fifth parliamentary election in two years, the impossibility of agreement between the two largest political forces in Bulgaria inevitably leads to either the formation of a minority government or a new appeal to the polls, political analysts point out.

PP co-chairman Asen Vassilev made it clear to reporters that the liberal party is not going to participate in a coalition government with GERB.

The prolonged political deadlockmainly due to the rivalry between the leaders of the two factions, has forced Bulgaria to delay both the adoption of the euro and the approval of the 2023 budget.

According to the results of Sunday’s parliamentary elections (although they are not final), GERB secures 26.5% and PP 24.6% of the votes. The nationalist “Renaissance”, close to Russia and opposed to Bulgaria joining the Eurozone, strengthened its percentage compared to last October’s elections, taking third place with 14.2%.
