Six Leopard 2A4 tanks out of 10 that Spain has committed to send to Ukraine will leave the country within the second fortnight of April, he told public television network TVE today the Spanish Minister of Defense Margarita Robles.

The German-made tanks have not been used since the 1990s and had been placed in reserve and needed to be adjusted and undergo readiness tests after initial doubts about whether they could return to combat.

Spain announced last month that it expects to send tanks to Ukraine after Easter Sunday on April 9.

Madrid pledged to send a total of 10 tanks to Ukraine, and Robles noted that the Spanish armed forces have begun repairing the remaining four.

Spain has also trained 40 tank crewmen and 15 engineers at a military base in the northeastern city of Zaragoza.

Other NATO member countries, including Germany, Poland and Portugal, have pledged to send a total of 48 Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.
