China today began three days of military exercises around Taiwan, declaring that they are a “stern warning” to the island’s “separatist forces”.
The day after Taiwan’s president Tsai Ing-wen returned from the US, the Chinese armed forces announced they were launching “combat readiness patrols” and military high schools around the Taiwan Strait, as well as north, south and east of the island, “as it was planned.”
Xi Yi, a spokesman for the military’s eastern sector command, said the high schools were a “stern warning” of collusion between separatist forces seeking “Taiwan independence” and foreign centers against the backdrop of their provocative actions.
Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen met with US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in Los Angeles on Wednesday, angering Beijing, which sees the island as a Chinese province slated for reunification with the mainland, even through of violence if deemed necessary.
In August 2022, following Nancy Pelosi’s (McCarthy’s predecessor) visit to Taipei, China held large-scale multi-day military training exercises around Taiwan.
