The alleged killer of a young woman who was burned alive on a public street in Peru — a femicide that shocked the country — has been “arrested in Colombia,” from where he will be extradited “to stand trial,” the Peruvian Interior Ministry said Wednesday on Twitter.

Venezuelan national Sergio Tarace Parra, 19, who had been issued an Interpol red flag, was wanted for allegedly dousing Catherine Gomes, 18, in mid-March with a flammable liquid and burning her alive, who wanted to end her their relationship.

The young woman, who was admitted to intensive care with burns over 60% of her body, succumbed six days later.

Peru of 33 million people recorded 136 femicides in 2022, compared to 146 in 2021 and 138 in 2020, according to official data.

In comparison, in France of 67 million inhabitants, 122 femicides were counted in 2021.
