Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani met today in Rome with his Tunisian counterpart, Nabil Amar, with the main topic of discussion being dealing with immigration and the critical economic phase that this North African country is going through.

“We are in favor of financial support to favor the development of such an important country. Italy sees Tunisia in a strategic way and will do what it can to the International Monetary Fund as well. We raised from the beginning the issue of reforms in Tunisia and the financing associated with the implementation of these reforms,” Tajani said.

He made it clear, however, that “Italy respects democracy and it is not its business – of course – to decide who should govern Tunisia”.

For his part, Nabil Amar underlined that his country “is willing to strengthen cooperation with all partners, with the aim of combating illegal human trafficking and protecting migrants”. “We are ready to do whatever is necessary, but in the medium term the solution is financial,” he added.

Finally, the head of Italian diplomacy confirmed that “both Rome and Tunis consider the fight against human traffickers to be of fundamental importance” and that in this matter “cooperation is serious, there are agreements which will continue to be implemented and strengthened” . As for the repatriations, he underlined that they continue even if sometimes there are bureaucratic problems”.
