Four people were killed and at least 12 injured in a bomb attack outside a pagoda in the eastern Myanmar city of Lashio earlier today.

Crowds had gathered at noon for the Water Festival – as the Burmese New Year (Thingyan) celebrations are more commonly known in the West.

Three cars exploded, killing four men and injuring at least 12 people, two of them seriously, one of the rescuers told AFP. A security official confirmed to AFP the number of casualties.

There has so far been no claim of responsibility for the bombing, which came days after an airstrike by the Myanmar junta on the village of Pazi Gyi (centre) held by anti-regime forces killed around 130 people.

After the 2021 coup, anti-regime forces have called for a boycott of all junta-backed events.
