Russia today claimed it had thwarted an attempt by Ukrainians to “illegally” infiltrate its territory in the Bryansk region, some 10 days after it reported a similar incident.

“The attacker blew himself up in a mined protection line, created by the Russian armed forces to prevent infiltrations into Russian territory and for the safety of the residents of the border communities,” the region’s governor, Alexander Bogomaz, said in a Telegram post. He claimed it was an “illegal attempt” by Ukraine to cross the Russian border.

Russian authorities have reported in recent weeks several such attempts by “saboteurs” from Ukraine on the border of the two countries, which are often bombed or hit by drones. On April 6, Bogomaz confirmed that border guards had foiled an infiltration attempt, opening fire on “20 men” from Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered security services to “do everything possible to guarantee the safety of the population” both in Russia and in Ukrainian territories controlled by Russian forces and where many pro-Russian officials have been killed in recent months.

Officially, Ukraine does not recognize sabotage operations on Russian soil. He denied, among other things, that he had anything to do with the attack that damaged the Crimean bridge last fall. In early March, however, hundreds of people attended the funeral of members of a voluntary group who were killed during a “sabotage” operation in Russia.
