French police will from today be able to use camera-equipped drones for a wide range of operations, including crowd surveillance and border control.

The relevant decree was published in the Government Gazette.

The development comes a year before the 2024 Paris Olympics, and at a time when popular opposition to President Macron’s pension reform has sparked massive protests that often turn violent.

The decree allows the police, customs authorities or the military to use drones to prevent attacks on people or property, to guarantee the safety of gatherings in public places, but also to maintain or restore public order when there is a risk of serious disruption. from these meetings.

Drones can also be used for terrorism prevention, traffic regulation, border surveillance and human rescue, the executive order said, detailing and effectively enforcing a security law passed last year in parliament.

The French Data Protection Authority in March requested the disclosure of details of the drone use policy, including the type of information about the public involved.
