The German armed forces announced on Sunday the evacuation of 101 people by military plane from Sudan, as scores of foreign nationals and diplomats are being evacuated at the initiative of various governments after more than a week of deadly hostilities between the army and paramilitaries.

“The first Airbus A400M is in flight from Jordan with the 101 deportees,” the Bundeswehr said via Twitter, clarifying that two more such aircraft will be sent to Sudan to participate in the hasty evacuation of Germans.

More than 300 German nationals are on the Foreign Ministry’s list of persons to be removed. Nationals of German partner countries are also sought to be transferred if possible.

The mission, involving more than 1,000 members of the German armed forces, took days to prepare. The first flight was supposed to take place on Wednesday, but had to be canceled due to the conditions in Sudan.

In the meantime, it was announced that the head of German diplomacy, Annalena Burbock, will not participate in the European Union’s foreign affairs council, which is being held today, Monday, due to the crisis in Sudan.

Germany will be represented by the country’s ambassador to Luxembourg, Michael Klaus

EU member states will mainly discuss their support for Ukraine. The crisis in Sudan is also on the agenda.
