At least 176 people have died in floods in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the governor of South Kivu province said today, as heavy rain destroyed homes and forced aid workers to pile up mud-covered bodies in one on top of the other.

The governor of South Kivu, Teo Ngoubidje Kashi, said the death toll stood at 176 and many more residents were missing. According to Kasole Martin, a member of a local organization, 227 bodies have been found so far.
“People are sleeping in the open, schools and hospitals were swept away by the watersMartin added.
Earlier today, survivors seeking shelter stood outside a log cabin where Red Cross members were placing the bodies – a Reuters reporter counted 72.
The tin roofs of flattened houses stood out through the thick layer of mud.
A doctor at Calleje’s largest hospital, Robert Masaba, said that since Thursday night, wounded people have been arriving continuously. “Me and my team haven’t slept at all.
We received 56 patients, eight out of ten have fractures,” he explained.
Floods and landslides are not uncommon in South Kivu, a province bordering Rwanda. In that neighboring country, 130 people have died and at least 5,000 homes have been destroyed by the rains this week.
