Dervis was invited to Turkey after the two financial crises in November 2000 and February 2001
Turkey’s former Minister of State for the Economy, former vice-president of the World Bank and former head of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has died at the age of 74. Kemal Dervish. He was the architect of Turkey’s exit from the financial crisis of 2000-01. He lived in the United States.
Dervis, who was invited to Turkey after the two financial crises in November 2000 and February 2001, left his position at the World Bank, where he had served for 22 years, and on March 3, 2001 took over the position of Minister of State.
Born to a Turkish father and German mother, Dervis was the only Turk to hold such high positions in international organizations. He had studied economics at the London School of Economics in Britain, and had a PhD from Princeton University.
His name had also been heard for the leadership of the IMF, while the New York Times had previously reported that he was an informal adviser to the former prime minister George Papandreou.
