A bus plunged off a bridge into a dry riverbed in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, killing 24 people, including three children and ten women.

About 30 injured have been taken to hospitals and some of them are in serious condition.

The bus broke the guard rail and fell from a height of about 17 meters. The Times of India reports that the bus driver has not been located and it is believed that he may have fallen asleep at the wheel and tried to escape.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow for the fatal accident, promising financial assistance to the families of the victims.

In India, an estimated 150,000 people die each year in road accidents (on average, one death every four minutes). According to a World Bank report published in 2021, 11% of road traffic deaths worldwide involved India.
