At least one protester was killed and 12 others, including six police officers, were injured in the city of Quetta, according to local authorities.
At least one protester he was killed at riots that broke out today in many areas of Pakistan after the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan as he was arriving at the Islamabad High Court where he would be tried for corruption.
Khan’s arrest came a day after the country’s powerful military criticized him for repeatedly accusing a senior military officer of plotting his assassination and the army chief of being responsible for his ouster a year ago.
Authorities in three of Pakistan’s four provinces banned all rallies after Khan’s supporters clashed with police, blocked major roads in several cities and stormed military installations in Lahore and Rawalpindi, according to eyewitnesses and video footage provided to the publicity the party of the former prime minister.
At least one protester was killed and 12 others, including six policemen, were injured in the city of Quetta, local Interior Minister Ziaullah Langov said.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Regulatory Authority said that on the orders of the Ministry of Interior, mobile telephony is being temporarily suspended. Netblocks, a cyber security and internet watchdog, said access to Twitter, Facebook and YouTube had been restricted.
According to Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, Khan was arrested by the National Accountability Agency (NAB) after he ignored the deadline given to him to surrender. The minister claimed that Khan and his wife received, while he was still prime minister, a plot of land worth 7 billion rupees (about 25 million euros) from a real estate agent accused in Britain of money laundering. British authorities returned 190 million pounds (about 250 million euros) to Pakistan in that case but Khan gave the money back to the estate agent, rather than keeping it in state coffers, he claimed.
The former prime minister denies the accusations.
GEO TV reported that Khan will be brought before a corruption court tomorrow.
